Year of the Dragon at GR2

SO Michael Kenny loaned me his copy of Gods, Men and Monsters from the Greek Myths last year. The illustrations in this book, by Giovanni Caselli, are tremendous. Highly detailed, though not boring, Caselli's drawing style reminds me of Eric Shanower's work on his own Age of Bronze comics.

There was a book signing at Family last Thursday for Kramers Ergot 8. At this event I was able to meet and chat with many well-known, accomplished cartoonists, including Tim Hensley (Wally Gropius, Fantagraphics, 2010). Speaking with Hensley, looking at his work again and watching him draw was the highlight of my evening.

Year of the Dragon also includes work by:

Cartooning Techniques (KID-011)

I've finished another term teaching Cartooning Techniques at the Art Center for KIDS. Here is the cover to my student's latest anthology.

On the last day of class, we take over one of the copiers in the faculty lounge and assemble these books on the spot. Students take home 2 copies each and I keep a few for my collection. I'm sorry to say you cannot find these comics at Last Gasp, Spit-and-a-Half or Bazaar Bizarre.

Here's a drawing booklet one of my students left behind. We assemble these on Day 1, and the students decorate them with what we hope will become the feature star of their semester's work.

Since I forgot to post these, here are the covers to our Summer Workshop anthologies.

Spring Term begins February 19, 2012.

this is a fun card game that will make you feel so smart and SO STUPID!

WHAT YOU NEED

one deck of cards.

OBJECT

2 to 4 players race to solve arithmetic problems and win all the cards.

SETUP

shuffle and deal out the whole deck evenly. For a four-handed game, each player is dealt 13 cards, 26 for a two-handed game.

GAMEPLAY

1. All players place one card, face-up, on the table (with two players, each player plays two cards). All four cards are placed next to each other so all players can see them.

2. The Ace (A) has a value of 1, 2-10 have their face value, and the Jack (J), Queen (Q) and King (K) have values of 11, 12 and 13.

3. Players can add, subtract, multiply or divide the card values to equal 24.

4. The first player to solve the problem calls "I have it!" They're then given a chance to explain their solution. If that solution is correct, the winning player takes all four played cards and puts them at the bottom of their hand.

5. If that player's solution is incorrect, play continues until someone solves the problem or all players agree the hand to be unsolvable. In that case, the cards go back to their respective hands.

6. As players lose all their cards, they drop out. If only three hands remain, players take turns laying down two cards.

HOW TO WIN

The game ends when only one player remains, or if play-time runs out. In the latter case, the player with the most cards is declared the winner.

EXAMPLES OF PLAY

5, 9, 7, 3

solution: 5 + 9 + 7 + 3 = 24

Q(12), A(1), 7, 9

solution: (9 - 7) (12 x 1) = 24

5, 8, 8, 2

solution: (5 x 8 + 8) / 2 = 24

Q(12), 10, 8, 3

solution: (Q X 10) / (8 - 3)= 24

TIPS

1. Knowing the multiples of 24 (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24) is very helpful, as are its divisors (24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144). For example, if a 6 is dealt, try using the other three cards to equal 4 (6 x 4 =24).

2. Many hands have more than one solution.
